Comcast Turns Xfinity Routers into Home Motion Detectors

Comcast has introduced a new feature for its Xfinity Shield service that leverages Wi-Fi routers to detect motion within homes. Dubbed Wi-Fi Motion, this feature is part of the Wi-Fi Shield service, which also includes Xfinity CyberSecure and Family Settings.

Wi-Fi Motion works by monitoring the signal strength and interference between the Wi-Fi router and connected devices. By measuring these frequency signals, it can detect if someone is moving around in the house. When unauthorized activity is detected, the router can instantly send an alert to the user's phone.

This feature is opt-in by default, requiring users to enable it through the Xfinity app. The app also provides three protection modes for monitoring: Home Watch, Away Watch, and Dark Watch.

While this feature may raise concerns about surveillance, Comcast claims it is a security measure aimed at providing users with an added layer of protection. However, some users have expressed skepticism about the effectiveness and potential for false positives.

Wi-Fi Motion is not a new concept, as researchers at Carnegie Mellon University used a TP-Link Archer AC1750 router to track human movement and positions in a room over three years ago.

The Wi-Fi Shield service is available free of charge to Comcast customers with Advanced Xfinity Gateways. For additional protection, Comcast offers Shield Select for $15/month, which includes an indoor camera, a window/door sensor, cloud storage for captured video footage, and 24/7 emergency response support.
