Acer unveils DualPlay Mini convertible handheld PC concept
Acer has shown a prototype handheld gaming PC that flips open into a mini laptop, aiming to combine gaming and productivity.

Acer has offered an early look at its DualPlay Mini concept, a device that aims to be both a gaming handheld and a mini laptop. The prototype was shown at the IFA event last week, where the company also unveiled its more standard Predator Atlas 7 handheld gaming PC.
The DualPlay Mini concept switches between a standard handheld configuration and a laptop. It opens up and flips its screen 180 degrees to expose a keyboard, concealing the control sticks and face buttons. The prototype runs Forza Horizon 6 smoothly and supports rumble features. The keyboard is reportedly large enough for users to play first-person shooters with a mouse and the WASD keys.
Acer did not reveal the hardware specifications for the DualPlay Mini. The company has not confirmed if or when the concept device will receive a proper commercial launch.
Comparison with GPD's approach
The design philosophy echoes products from another manufacturer, GPD. Acer's concept appears to combine the look of GPD's Win Max handheld gaming laptops with the form factor of GPD's 8-inch 2-in-1 devices. GPD's recently unveiled Win Max 3 model brings AMD's Ryzen AI Max system-on-chip to its lineup of 9-inch laptops.
The GPD Win Max 3 represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor. It triples GPU performance compared to the 2025 model. The device also shifts its thermal design power window from 15-35 watts to 45-110 watts.
| Feature | GPD Win Max 3 (2025 Model) | GPD Win Max 3 (New Model) |
|---|---|---|
| GPU Performance | Baseline | Tripled |
| Screen Technology | 60Hz LCD | 165Hz AMOLED |
| TDP Window | 15-35W | 45-110W |
Magnetic covers on the Win Max 3 hide the control sticks and buttons for a more professional appearance. With its strong processor and support for up to 128GB of unified RAM, GPD positions the device as a capable local AI workstation. The key difference from Acer's prototype is the lack of a 2-in-1 configuration with a 360-degree screen swivel, a feature found in GPD's Pocket 4.
The standard handheld alternative
Alongside the convertible concept, Acer presented the Predator Atlas 7, a more traditional handheld gaming PC. This model features an Intel Arc G3 system-on-chip and 25GB of memory. It is equipped with a 7-inch, 120Hz 1080p screen and includes Thunderbolt 4 support.
Availability for the Predator Atlas 7 is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. The reveal comes months after Gigabyte stated it would only enter the handheld PC market if it could stand out from competitors like Valve, Lenovo, Asus, GPD, and Acer. Most devices in this category follow the design popularized by Valve's Steam Deck, though some have experimented with features like Nintendo Switch 2-style detachable controllers. Acer's DualPlay Mini concept is its attempt to blend gaming and productivity in a single miniature device.
