AMD RDNA 5 GPUs rumored to target 3.4GHz

A leaker claims AMD's next-generation RDNA 5 graphics architecture could target clock speeds up to 3.4 GHz, a 15% increase over the current flagship.

A reputable hardware leaker has suggested AMD's next-generation RDNA 5 graphics architecture could target clock speeds as high as 3.4 GHz. This would represent an approximate 15 percent increase over the 2.97 GHz boost clock of the current RDNA 4 flagship, the Radeon RX 9070 XT.

According to a post on the AnandTech Forums by the generally reliable source Kepler_L2, internal AMD documentation points to a target frequency range of 3.1 to 3.4 GHz for RDNA 5. The leaker did not clarify if this range applies to a specific graphics card or to the architecture as a whole. Since RDNA 5 is expected to underpin discrete, integrated, and console graphics, it is likely only high-end models will clock above 3 GHz.

Rumored core and memory specifications

Earlier leaks provide a picture of a potential four-tier product stack. The specifications remain unconfirmed by AMD.

Die TierCompute UnitsTotal CoresMemory Bus WidthVRAM Capacity
FlagshipUp to 9612,288384-bitUp to 32GB GDDR7
Mid-tier405,120Up to 384-bitUp to 24GB
Low-tier243,072128-bit to 256-bit8GB to 16GB
Entry-level121,53664-bit8GB to 16GB

The flagship Navi 5X die is tipped to carry a 384-bit memory bus, which is 50 percent wider than the 256-bit bus on the Radeon RX 9070 XT. This wider bus, combined with denser memory dies, could enable up to 32GB of GDDR7 memory on the top card.

Context and potential delays

If accurate, the core configuration would mark a significant change from RDNA 4, which reportedly caps out at 64 cores per compute unit. AMD could still tweak the final RDNA 5 lineup. The ongoing spike in memory prices is a factor. With prices unlikely to ease soon, it remains unclear if a 32GB consumer graphics card will materialize with this generation.

Timing has also shifted. AMD is now expected to unveil RDNA 5 in late 2027 or early 2028. Board partners had initially anticipated a mid-2027 announcement, but the ongoing memory supply crunch has reportedly pushed the launch back.

Kepler_L2's comment originally came in response to another forum member questioning whether integrated graphics in AMD's next-generation APUs could reach 4 GHz. Nvidia, for its part, was also expected to launch its Rubin-based gaming GPUs around 2027, though the company has gone quiet on those plans for months.
