Intel Nova Lake BFC leak reveals cache-focused desktop CPUs

A leaked product list details three Intel Nova Lake desktop CPUs with a 'BFC' tag for large last-level cache.

Components: A leaked product list details three Intel Nova Lake desktop CPUs with a 'BFC' tag for large last-level cache

A leaked specification table for Intel's upcoming Nova Lake desktop CPUs reveals three models with a new 'BFC' branding for large last-level cache. The list, which surfaced on October 2, 2026, outlines seven initial models for the NVL-S lineup, directly targeting AMD's X3D chips that have led gaming benchmarks since 2022.

The rumored SKU table showcases seven models. Three carry the BFC suffix and a 'BLLC' series marking, indicating big last-level cache. The flagship is the Core Ultra 9 4970K BFC, a 28-core chip with 8 performance cores, 16 efficiency cores, and 4 low-power efficiency cores. It has a 125W base power rating. The other BFC models are the 24-core Core Ultra 7 4870K BFC and the 22-core Core Ultra 9 4900 BFC.

Core Ultra 7 4870K BFC8 + 12 + 4Yes125W

The standard models in the leak share core configurations with their BFC counterparts but lack the cache designation. The table does not include a long-rumored 52-core configuration, which is expected for a later high-end desktop platform. Features like low-power efficiency cores and vPro support were likely omitted from the leak rather than being absent from the chips.

BFC as Intel's answer to AMD X3D in gaming

Intel's BFC branding signals a flat cache design to counter AMD's stacked 3D V-Cache. AMD's X3D technology, launched in 2022, has delivered double-digit percentage gains in average frame rates and 1% lows in cache-sensitive games. This is the first time the BFC tag has appeared in leaks, though prior rumors referred to the feature as bLLC. The branding may serve as a retail shortcut similar to AMD's X3D. One observer noted, "X3D leading the benchmark charts over and over was indeed intolerable for Intel."

The Core Ultra 9 4970K BFC features an integrated GPU with 32 Execution Units. This 32-EU iGPU, likely corresponding to 4 Xe cores, is standard across the Nova Lake range except for a Core Ultra 5 model. Intel retired the EU terminology years ago in favor of Xe cores. No independent benchmark data exists for Intel's BFC chips, whereas AMD's X3D has four years of proven performance data.

Platform readiness and broader Nova Lake context

Nova Lake platform development is advancing. The platform has recently cleared compliance testing for USB4 80Gbps and PCIe 5.0 standards. At the Computex trade show earlier this year, two Z990 motherboards were publicly displayed. Last month, a leaked slide from an Intel partner also teased the upcoming platform.

Intel leadership has set clear expectations. The company's CEO confirmed at the beginning of the year that Nova Lake would arrive before the end of the year. Intel Vice President Robert Hallock has also teased the platform's return to a Raptor Lake-style approach for DDR4 systems.

What remains unknown about the BFC chips

Despite the detailed leak, critical specifications are still missing. Intel has not confirmed model names, the BFC designation, core counts, cache sizes, or power figures. No clock speeds, memory support details, full cache breakdowns, pricing, or launch dates have surfaced in a verified form. The leak does not confirm the manufacturing process, die size, or the physical implementation of the big last-level cache.

This leaves no actionable purchase advice, as the BFC parts are not yet purchasable, priced, or dated. As one commenter put it, "Gaming is the only thing Intel has not been able to outperform AMD on since the launch of the 7800X3D." The Core Ultra 9 4900 BFC model lacks a 'K' suffix and has a 65W TDP, suggesting it could be a specialized, low-power chip for small form factor gaming desktops. Platform readiness continues, with Nova Lake having passed key USB and PCIe compliance tests and Z990 motherboards seen at Computex earlier this year.
