GFiber 20 Gig customers are about to receive an upgrade from Wi-Fi 7 to Wi-Fi 8. The new gFiber Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway, engineered by Gemtek, leverages the Qualcomm Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite Platform. This AI-native broadband gateway combines Wi-Fi 8 quad-band connectivity, a penta-core CPU, and a dedicated neural processing unit for edge AI computing.

The collaboration between Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., gFiber, Inc., and Gemtek was announced on October 12, 2026. The product was demonstrated at the Network X 2026 telecommunications trade show. It is intended to serve as a household's primary internet hub and a local platform for agentic AI, with processing occurring directly on the device.

gFiber service integration and rollout

The gateway will support gFiber’s symmetrical 20 gig and 50 gig services. Initial deployment is for customers on the 25G-PON-based 20 Gig tier, who are currently using an Actiontec Wi-Fi 7 gateway. GFiber will offer its own branded Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway for these subscribers.

The upgrade is hoped to be provided free of charge when rollouts start. Commercial deployment is targeted for 2027, pending the completion of a certification process. GFiber is the launch service provider and defines the subscriber experience. The 50 Gig service, based on 50G-PON technology, begins residential trials in the spring of next year and will be fully supported by the same gateway hardware.

AI and intelligent features

Intelligent software for the gateway is provided by Genix Networks, a Gemtek subsidiary. The Genix software connects the gateway, devices, and network through an AI-driven interface. This enables local AI processing for voice-controlled network management, security, and smart home integration.

Subscribers can use natural-language voice commands to manage their home network and access supported services. Demonstrated features include Intent-Based Parental Controls, Frictionless Guest Access via voice-initiated QR code generation on the router's touch screen, and Smart Home personalization. Local processing of supported requests can improve responsiveness and help protect privacy. Gautam Sheoran, senior vice president and general manager for Connectivity, Broadband, and Networking at Qualcomm, said the platform is "bringing together premium Wi-Fi 8 connectivity, high-performance networking, and native edge AI in a single architecture."

Gemtek reimagines the gateway as a striking living-room centerpiece, with a new aesthetic design intended to encourage placement in optimal signal locations. The company leads product and AI system innovation, integrating the hardware and Genix software into a carrier-grade solution.

Availability, pricing and market context

The 20 Gig service that will first use this gateway is priced at $250 per month and is only available in select U.S. markets. While many Americans have access to 1, 2, and 8 Gig fiber tiers, 20 Gig connections remain a rarity. GFiber did not specify whether the gateway upgrade for existing 20 Gig customers will carry an additional cost.

This announcement marks an early rollout of hardware based on the unratified Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn) specification. It follows TP-Link's announcement of preorders for its first Wi-Fi 8 consumer router late last month. The three companies are exploring a new broadband model that integrates technology, product, AI system innovation, and service experience. Sheoran added that the platform, "Combined with an open agentic AI framework, provides a flexible foundation to deploy, customize, and scale agentic AI directly on the gateway."

Commercial deployment of the gateway is targeted for 2027, beginning with gFiber’s 20 gig customers.
