Modders have unlocked a significant performance gain for NVIDIA's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering. The fix, developed by matiasLombo and called Neural Upstream, reworks the rendering order to apply neural processing before upscaling.

According to a test reported by TechPowerUp, an RTX 4080 running Assassin's Creed Shadows at 4K with DLSS Performance saw frame rates jump from 31 FPS to around 50 FPS using the mod. This compares to 63 FPS with the neural rendering effect disabled entirely.

The Pipeline Problem and Fix

The performance issue stems from where NVIDIA placed Neural Rendering in its standard pipeline. It normally runs as the final step, processing the fully upscaled 4K frame. This design causes a massive computational cost at higher resolutions.

Neural Upstream addresses this by applying the neural rendering to the lower-resolution frame before DLSS Super Resolution scales it up. This approach mirrors how Performance and Quality presets function for standard DLSS upscaling. The mod is distributed through DLSS5-Autopilot, a community tool similar to DLSS 5 Swapper that enables the feature in games without official support.

The Trade-Off: Performance vs. Quality

There is a visual trade-off for this performance boost. TechPowerUp's report suggests NVIDIA's standard pipeline prioritizes image fidelity. Applying neural rendering earlier, as Neural Upstream does, reportedly results in a further hit to visual quality on top of DLSS 5's existing "uncanny valley" issues.

The source notes that NVIDIA is still tuning DLSS 5 for its new RTX 50-series cards before expanding support to older GPUs. There is no official word on whether an approach like Neural Upstream could become a sanctioned preset.

Community Momentum and Future

The modding community has been actively working on DLSS 5 since it was leaked. This latest development highlights ongoing experimentation with the controversial feature. Given the substantial frame rate cost of the current official implementation, the report speculates that NVIDIA may eventually consider a performance-oriented preset.

The work demonstrates how enthusiasts are exploring the practical limits of gaming hardware and software. It shows a clear path to higher frame rates per dollar for existing RTX 40-series hardware when using DLSS 5, albeit with a compromise in image quality that users must weigh.
