Smartphone Memory Costs Up 340%, Top Chipset

A tipster says smartphone RAM and storage costs have surged 340% to $310 in Q3 2026, now costing more than a premium processor.

A tipster says smartphone RAM and storage costs have surged 340% to $310 in Q3 2026, now costing more than a premium...

The cost of memory and storage in smartphones has skyrocketed, now surpassing the price of the main processor. According to estimates from the Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, a combination of 12GB of DRAM and 256GB of NAND flash now costs manufacturers approximately $310.

This represents a massive 340 percent increase compared to the estimated $70 cost for the same components just one year ago. The source states this price surge has made the memory and storage pairing the single most expensive component in a smartphone's bill of materials.

Memory Costs Outpace Premium Chipsets

While premium smartphone chipsets have also become more expensive, their price increases have not matched the dramatic rise seen in memory. Digital Chat Station notes that high-end system-on-chips (SoCs) are priced around $280. This makes the processor the second most expensive component, but it is now cheaper than the memory and storage combo in many devices.

The comparison of key component costs, as estimated by the tipster for Q3 2026, is shown below:

ComponentEstimated Cost
12GB RAM + 256GB NAND Flash$310
Premium Smartphone SoC$280

Android phone makers face an additional cost burden. Unlike Apple, they must pay a premium to firms like Qualcomm and MediaTek to use their silicon.

Impact on Smartphone Design and Pricing

The soaring memory costs are directly impacting device specifications and retail prices. The report claims this is one reason why some of Google's newest Pixel 11 Pro models ship with 12GB of RAM instead of 16GB and are more expensive than their Pixel 10 Pro predecessors.

Opting for higher memory configurations would result in a massive bill of materials figure. A 16GB RAM and 256GB storage option, or a 16GB and 512GB combo, would force manufacturers to introduce substantial price hikes. Smartphone brands will struggle immensely to maintain healthy profit margins under these conditions.

Apple maintains a cost advantage by designing its own chipsets and having TSMC mass produce them. However, the company is not immune to the global DRAM shortage and associated price pressures.

Further price increases for memory and storage are expected into 2028. The tipster suggests the current cost crisis may not subside until sometime in 2029.
