Sony and Microsoft face all-digital future

Sony and Microsoft may be unable to offer disc drives in their next-generation consoles, even as optional add-ons. This is due to the collapsing supply chain for the specialized components required to build optical disc drives, according to a new report from Windows Central.

Industry sources told Windows Central that the few remaining companies producing these components are pivoting to other markets. As the parts become less common, the cost of manufacturing disc drives rises sharply. The technical analysis outlet Digital Foundry later corroborated this situation in a recent podcast. They explained that the component shortage has reached a point where producing drives at scale is becoming increasingly impractical.

The Rising Cost of Physical Media

This creates a major problem for platform holders. Even if Sony or Microsoft wanted to offer disc drives for their next consoles, the cost of sourcing the necessary parts could push the price of a drive up by hundreds of dollars. Disc drives were once cheap, near-commodity components. Today, they are niche hardware with shrinking manufacturing support, making them far more expensive to produce.

The report suggests that any attempt to preserve physical support would likely result in higher hardware prices for consumers. If a next-generation Xbox or PlayStation had a disc-drive edition, it could cost between $200 and $300 more than an all-digital model.

Software Challenges Compound the Issue

Physical media has already been struggling on the software side. A recent study from the group Does It Play highlighted significant functionality issues with current-generation game discs. The study found that only a portion of physical game releases work fully offline.

PlatformDiscs Working Fully Offline
PS566 percent
Xbox Series X/S50 percent

Earlier this year, Sony confirmed plans to go all-digital for future PlayStation releases. As part of that transition, the factory responsible for manufacturing physical PS5 game discs began re-tooling itself for an entirely different product line.

A Supply Chain Squeeze

Between disc manufacturing winding down and disc drive components becoming prohibitively expensive, the future of physical media is being squeezed from both ends. The supply chain issues emerging now make the situation far more complicated than simple market preference. Even if platform holders wanted to keep disc drives around, doing so may soon be too costly to justify. The supply chain may simply make preserving physical media impossible.
