RPCS3 Emulator Adds Universal PS3 Disc Play Support

The RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator now allows games to be booted directly from original Blu-ray discs across Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD.

The RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator now allows games to be booted directly from original Blu-ray discs across Windows...

The RPCS3 emulator can now run PlayStation 3 games directly from their original Blu-ray discs. This 'plug & play' feature, announced by the RPCS3 team, is now available universally across all supported operating systems.

Developers 'digant73' and 'Megamouse' contributed the key code changes that extended the functionality beyond Windows to include Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS. The team has also optimized install times for on-disc packages. According to the developers, the feature should theoretically support physical games released up to 20 years ago without needing external servers.

Hardware Requirements and Limitations

To use the new feature, users must have a compatible Blu-ray drive and provide a valid decryption key for their specific disc. RPCS3 uses this key to decrypt the game's content during the boot process. The emulator's developers state that a compatible BD drive is a 'hard' limitation.

PS3 games do not use the standard Blu-ray format, so drives require specific MediaTek chipsets to read the discs correctly. The RPCS3 quickstart guide includes an official list of working drives. Many drives use these chipsets, but not all do.

Preserving Physical Game Libraries

The RPCS3 team is promoting direct disc play as a way for users to get the most value from their personal physical game collections. This development arrives as Sony has confirmed it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in 2028, moving the platform toward an all-digital future.

The feature represents a significant step toward the emulator's original goal of perfectly preserving the entire PS3 library. RPCS3's compatibility rate has recently reached a 'playable' state for 75% of the entire PS3 game library.

The Emulation Milestone

Enabling direct disc play is a major technical advancement for an emulator tasked with replicating the PlayStation 3's complex Cell multi-core microarchitecture, once considered an 'impossible' goal. The feature allows retro gaming enthusiasts a new method to access their physical collections directly, aligning with the project's preservation aims.

One user reported successfully extracting and booting an original copy of Demon's Souls using an Asus 'UHD Friendly' Blu-ray burner (model BW-16D1HT) and now expects to boot it straight from the disc as well.
